Frequently Asked Questions
What is Microsclerotherapy?
Microsclerotherapy is a technique used to remove thread veins. A very fine needle is used to inject a salt solution into the vein which irritates the lining of the vein causing the walls to stick together. Blood stops flowing through the veins, which are then absorbed by the body over a few weeks. The blood is safely directed back into the deeper veins.
What are thread veins?
Thread veins are very fine dilated veins just beneath the surface of the skin. Heredity and hormonal surges are believed to be among the main causes of thread veins. In some patients thread veins are caused by varicose veins. They are also called spider veins, broken veins or red veins.
When will the thread vein disappear?
Around 70% of veins treated tend to disappear.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies from person to person and depends on the position and size of the veins. On average we treat clients with two to six treatments with intervals of four to eight weeks inbetween.
Does it hurt?
The solution that is injected into the thread vein is mixed with a local anaesthetic to minimise any pain. We usually recommend our clients take a couple of over-the-counter painkillers an hour before the treatment and we are pleased to say that most patients tolerate any discomfort without any problems.
Are there any side effects?
An allergic reaction to the injection is possible, though rare. Some clients experience bruising which can last from two weeks to three months depending on the size of the blood vessels treated. High compression stockings are worn for a few days to help reduce the amount of bruising. Most clients choose to have this treatment in the Autumn or Winter so they can, if they wish, hide any bruising under clothing.
