Frequently Asked Questions
What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that causes spots to develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest. The spots can range from surface blackheads and whiteheads to deep, inflamed, pus-filled pustules and cysts, which can be severe and long-lasting and lead to scarring.
What causes acne?
Acne can be associated with hormonal, lifestyle or diet changes. Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a bacteria which normally lives on skin and causes acne by attacking sebaceous glands that produce a natural skin oil called sebum. Sometimes the sebaceous gland will overproduce sebum and this blocks the pores at the base of the fine hairs on your skin, trapping the bacteria.
As the sebum and bacteria continue to grow, white blood cells move into the area and begin to fight the bacteria, causing swelling and red inflammation, and a spot forms. This process continues until the white blood cells have managed to fight the P. acnes infection and the inflammation stops or until the pore is unblocked and the sebum levels are reduced.
What is Dermalux™ LED Phototherapy?
Dermalux™ LED Phototherapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of LED light (without the sun’s harmful UV rays) to repair and rejuvenate skin cells. The skin absorbs the light and uses it as a source of energy to encourage the body’s fibroblast cells to produce collagen and growth factors. This plumps up the skin which smooths out lines and wrinkles. It also increases anti-oxidant enzyme levels which help to repair the skin and reduce the appearance of blood vessels.
Your trained specialist will take into account your skin type and any skin condition you may have to work out the correct amount of light for the most effective treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
This can vary with age and the severity of your acne. With LED Phototherapy the results ae cumulative and improvement will continue even after the treatment has stopped. What is Lustre Pure Light Pro?
Lustre Pure Light Pro is a small, rechargeable device with slim, flexible therapy heads which target problem areas with safe blue ligh
How does Lustre Pure Light work?
The bacteria that causes acne produces a chemical called porphyrin and when blue light, at a specific wavelength, is applied to this porphyrin it becomes activated. The active porphyrins are then converted into singlet oxygen which then destroy the bacteria.
Lustre Pure Light tackles this bacteria is by harnessing the safe, blue part of the natural light spectrum by giving off a light at 415 nanometres and does not contain any ultraviolet light, which can damage skin.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is an innovative and technologically advanced treatment which uses suction to gently lift the skin while exfoliating using finely ground corundum crystal flakes. It is not to be confused with dermabrasion procedures which are surgical, invasive procedures that typically require a local anaesthetic.
When will I see improvements in my skin?
Your skin will look refreshed after the first treatment but clients usually require up to six treatment for optimum results. Microdermabrasion can have a recovery time of two days.
What happens during my microdermabrasion treatment?
You will be treated by one of our highly qualified professionals. During an hour-long treatment the area for treatment will be cleansed and analysed. The microdermabrasion will take approximately 20 minutes, followed by the application of an intense moisturising mask. Once your skin has been thoroughly rehydrated, the area will be gently massaged and a collagen serum applied followed by a moisturiser.
How many treatments will I need?
Optimum results are usually achieved after six treatments but the number of treatments you require will differ from person to person.
Does it hurt?
Most people say that microdermabrasion feels like a mild scratching sensation. Your skin may appear a little red immediately after the treatment but this should disappear within a few hours.
What is radiofrequency?
Radiofrequency works by producing heat that is converted to thermal energy that works deep into the skin. This causes tissue contraction which encourages the body to form new collagen (the skin’s support structure) which improves the skin’s appearance.
Does it hurt?
You will experience a brief, deep heating sensation as the radiofrequency energy is delivered to the skin and underlying tissue. Your specialist will control the amount of energy that is delivered and will make sure you remain comfortable without compromising the effectiveness of the procedure.
Are there any side effects?
There are usually no side effects. In rare cases you may experience some swelling, redness or blisters around the treated area. These side effects usually disappear in a few days.
Is it safe?
We use the CoaxMed system which has an excellent safety record.
