Frequently Asked Questions
What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks or striae are a form of scarring on the skin often caused when the skin stretches as a result of rapid growth or weight changes. Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy. Stretch marks are most commonly thought of in connection with pregnancy but can also occur in men and women after rapid weight loss or gain. They can also be experienced by teenagers after rapid growth spurts. Stretch marks present no health problem but can cause a loss of confidence.
How does carboxytherapy work?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is infused below the skin to make the blood vessels dilate and enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients. By improving circulation in this way, fluid build-up between cells is diminished, improving skin elasticity and tone and lessening skin damage and marks.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the extent and severity of your stretch marks. Our specialist will be able to advise you at your consultation. Treatments are carried out every 2-4 weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Occasionally some people experience temporary redness or bruising at the site of the injection.
How soon will I see improvements in my stretch marks?
Most people see an improvement after the first treatment. Studies have demonstrated that carboxytherapy improves skin elasticity, improves circulation, encourages collagen repair, improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and destroys localised fatty deposits.
Does it hurt?
The treatment of stretch marks is relatively painless. Some pressure from the gas may be felt as the stretch-marks are distended, and they can feel a bit itchy, but this usually disappears after a few minutes. The treated area will feel warm and tingly for up to 24 hours after the treatment as the circulation to the area is improved.
How safe is carboxytherapy?
There are no known risks associated with carboxytherapy. Carboxytherapy originated at the Royal Spas of France in 1932 with the treatment of patients afflicted by peripheral arterial occlusive disease. In South America and Europe, carbon dioxide therapy has been applied to the treatment of stretch marks, cellulite, and hypertrophic scars with impressive results.
